Topographic maps use contours to show relief; these maps also show surface features such as rivers, marshes, roads, trails, and buildings. The U.S. Geological Survey publishes topographic maps of Wisconsin at various scales; these maps are available from the Map Sales office.
Most popular are the 7.5-minute (scale 1:24,000) quadrangle maps, which sell for $8.00 per quadrangle. An index shows the quadrangles currently available; it can be downloaded as an Adobe® Acrobat® pdf. (If you prefer, a printed copy of the index map may be obtained free upon request from the Map Sales office.) The pdf is approximately 4 Mb in size. The original image measures 30.9 inches by 32.75 inches; for best viewing, open the pdf in Acrobat and marquee the area you wish to search with the magnifying glass tool.
County topographic maps (scale 1:100,000) and 30-minute x 1 degree (metric) and 1 x 2 degree quadrangles (scale 1:250,000) are also available from the Map and Publication Sales office for $9.00.
For those who prefer digital versions of maps, the Survey also sells the National Geographic Society's eight-CD set of GPS- and GIS-ready topographic maps of Wisconsin, Illinois, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan ($49.95) that allow the user to draw their trip routes, calculate elevation profiles, add notes, and then print the result at the desired scale. The included 3-D Viewer and Animated Fly-Thru enable the user to fly along a created trip route, climb hills, and enjoy the view. Live map updating ensures the user is aware of latest maps available for downloading.
You may order any of these products by using our order form (in Adobe Acrobat pdf format) or contact the Map Sales office (telephone 608/263.7389; email firstname.lastname@example.org) for additional information. Shipping charges are extra.
