Flambeau Copper Mine

Flambeau Mine, near Ladysmith, WI . Black chalcocite-rich ore veins shown dipping steeply on north wall of the pit. Photo taken March, 1995

LOCATION: Sec. 9 T.34N. R.6W., 2 km. south of Ladysmith west of Hwy. 27.

ACCESSIBILITY: Owned and mined by the Flambeau Mining Company, a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper. The mine and dumps are now (August, 2007) completely reclaimed, with no collecting possible. The site is a park with hiking and ski trails open to the public.

GEOLOGY: A Proterozoic massive sulfide deposit interpreted to be a submarine exhalative deposit interbedded with volcanic rocks , dominantly tuffs of intermediate composition. The whole sequence has been been deformed and metamorphosed to the upper greenschist to lower amphibolite facies during the Penokean orogeny. The layers are now slightly overturned to the west. Cambrian weathering produced a thick supergene/ oxidized zone, which was covered by Mt. Simon sandstone. Pleistocene till and outwash cap the deposit, but glacial erosion only partly breeched the sandstone cap, leaving much of the supergene/ oxidized zone intact.
